I have always enjoyed science fiction, and I think electronic music is a natural medium to express its themes. Edward Elmer ‘Doc’ Smith’s Lensman series is one of the greatest epics of SF, a galactic history of the struggle between the psychic warriors of Arisia and the malevolent forces of Eddore, punctuated by planet-smashing space battles – you may recognize some of its themes mirrored in the TV series Babylon 5.  I first read the Lensman books in the Panther paperback editions published with the fantastic cover artwork of Chris Foss, whose visions of massive industrial-looking starships and colourful spacescapes ideally complemented the books.  I’d like to dedicate this album to him with thanks for his inspiration.

In creating this album I haven’t tried to avoid the obvious influences such as Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze, and Jean Michel Jarre, but I have tried to vary the pieces rather than slavishly imitating one style or era. I have also tried to use as wide as possible a range of instruments, from analogue, digital and samploid synthesizers to VSTis and classic drum machines.

This album was developed over many years as I experimented with different performance and recording systems, and is intended to be the first of many, now that my studio is finally complete. The MP3 tracks on Soundcloud should be listened to sequentially to preserve the track transitions.

I hope you enjoy the album, and that it will encourage you to read ‘Doc’ Smith’s

Lensman books.
